Russia has introduced stricter health checks for travelers arriving from Egypt, the Russian health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, announced on Monday. The traditionally popular tourist destination for Russians reported an outbreak of a yet-to-be identified disease over the weekend.

Some 250 cases of the illness were registered in Qena governorate, Upper Egypt, the country’s Ministry of Health and Population said. All patients suffered from mild to moderate symptoms, with none of them requiring hospitalization.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has reported 67 cases of a mysterious disease causing fever and fatigue in Qena, it said on Sunday.

"In light of the current situation, Rospotrebnadzor has tightened sanitary and quarantine controls with respect to flights from Egypt, including using the Perimeter automated information system," it said in a statement reported by the Russian news agency TASS on Monday.

Symptoms include body aches, fever, and, in some cases, vomiting and nausea, according to Assistant Minister of Health for Preventive Medicine Affairs Amr Qandil.

The Russian watchdog said symptoms of the disease resemble those of dengue fever, adding that it is in contact with the Egyptian side and international organizations to learn more about the disease.

Black First Land First (BLF) said in a statement on Friday that Tropical Cyclone Idai  is not a natural disaster but a direct consequence of the white, Western system of ecological assault for profits.

BLF called on the African Union (AU) to demand reparations and relief from the European Union (EU) and the US for Cyclone Idai. Part of the statement reads:

    Those who pollute and destroy our ecosystems must pay ecological reparations to those who suffer as a consequence of their irresponsible actions. It’s no longer speculation – even the white man’s own science corroborates what we blacks know: Africa is paying a heavy price for the actions of the white world. The West pollutes and the West must pay. Part of driving their conspiracy of recolonisation [sic] is to profit from disasters. The West has no incentive to stop destroying our planet. The West knows only one value and that is to make profits. If the West is not stopped soon, then we should prepare for the extinction of our species.

An African practice of "ironing" a girl's chest with a hot stone to delay breast formation is spreading in the UK to "protect" young girls from unwanted male attention, sexual harassment and rape, the media reported on Saturday (January 26).

The Guardian reported that community workers in London, Yorkshire, Essex and the West Midlands informed the newspaper about cases in which pre-teen girls from the diaspora of several African countries were subjected to the painful, abusive and futile practice.

The United Nations (UN) has described the practice as one of five global under-reported crimes relating to gender-based violence.

The perpetrators, usually mothers, consider it a traditional measure which protects girls from unwanted male attention, sexual harassment and rape. Medical experts and victims, however, call it child abuse which could lead to physical and psychological scars, infections, inability to breastfeed, deformities and breast cancer.
