41 new lawsuits filed in NJ's handling of COVID at veterans homes.

Gothamist: NJ's handling of COVID at veterans homes under fresh scrutiny — 41 new lawsuits filed.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy's [Democrat] administration has been accused since early in the pandemic of failing to protect the residents and employees of nursing and veterans homes. Veterans home staffers have filed 41 lawsuits against the Murphy administration this month alone.

They describe how nursing home management was caught off-guard by COVID, and how managers penalized staffers for trying to protect themselves. And the problems, they say, go to the top — to Murphy and his state Department of Health.

Scott Fallon has been reporting on the pandemic for NorthJersey.com. He spoke about where things stand with All Things Considered host Sean Carlson on WNYC Wednesday. The transcript of their discussion below has been lightly edited for clarity.

New Jersey man wearing N95 mask passes out while driving. Wrecks car, snaps telephone pole. (♬♬... And he had fun fun fun til the wifey took his T-Bird Away...♬♬)

A New Jersey man passed out and crashed into a telephone pole this week, and police believe the accident could have been avoided if he hadn’t worn an N95 mask while driving.

...wearing an N95 mask too long can cause someone to inadvertently restrict their oxygen — which is what they believed happened to a man who crashed his car on Thursday.

[The driver's] ruby red vehicle with a badly damaged front end. An additional photo from the scene showed a telephone pole snapped at its base.

The driver was transported to the hospital for a “complaint of pain” and he sustained no life-threatening injuries, the department said.

According to the California Department of Public Health, N95 respirators may make breathing more difficult and can lead to increased breathing and heart rates.
Driving while wearing an N-95 mask is dangerous. You should immediately drop everything you're doing and get the evaluation of a medical professional on whether or not you should wear one in the car, especially if driving alone like the guy in the story.

..."a complaint of pain." I think snapping a telephone pole with your car may contribute to that.
