MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Guatemalan authorities rescued 160 children and adolescents from the fundamentalist Jewish sect Lev Tahor in southeastern Guatemala on Friday following allegations of child abuse, including rape, prosecutors said.

The rescue operation in the agricultural municipality of Oratorio, 78 kilometers (48.47 miles) southeast of Guatemala City, highlights ongoing concerns over the controversial practices of the Lev Tahor sect, which has faced similar allegations in the past.

Authorities in Guatemala rescued at least 160 children from a Jewish sect following allegations of abuse and human trafficking.

They took at least 160 minors and 40 women into protective custody.

The operation in the Santa Rosa region involved around 480 police personnel, soldiers, prosecutors, and psychologists who also seized electronic devices and searched for evidence of child pornography.

“Based on the statements of the complainants, the evidence obtained and the medical examinations, it was possible to establish that there are forms of human trafficking against these minors, like forced marriages, abuse, and related crimes,” [said Nancy Lorena Paiz García, a prosecutor in the Office Against Human Trafficking].

Lev Tahor, “Pure Heart” in Hebrew, was founded in Israel in 1988 and practices a strict interpretation of Jewish law. It has drawn international scrutiny over the years for alleged sexual abuses, kidnapping, child marriage, and physical violence.

The sect shifted its base to Mexico and Guatemala between 2014 and 2017 after facing mounting legal pressure elsewhere.

In 2022, Mexican authorities rescued children from a Lev Tahor camp near the Guatemalan border and detained its members suspected of abusing minors.

Another BBC journalist said Berg plays a key role in a broader BBC culture of "systematic Israeli propaganda."

"How much power he has is wild," said another journalist.

"There was an extreme fear at the BBC, that if you ever wanted to do anything about Israel or Palestine, editors would say: 'If you want to pitch something, you have to go through Raffi and get his signoff," another journalist explained.

In one case, Berg downplayed Amnesty International's accusation that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

Investigators found and rescued more than 200 people, including 160 abused children and teenagers, and 40 adult women.
