There was a special on television that showed the legal, and illegal, side of organ doners. One makes a huge profit legally, and the other illegally. While it may seem to be a worthwhile cause to help the medical profession, realistically, the fact those with the most interest never receive a dime should be considered.

Jess , Agree 110%. I've seen similar television programs on it also. The families should be compensated. That organ donation is done without profit for the hospitals and doctors is, mostly I think, a myth or bookkeeping "magic".

I witnessed first hand how the "designated requestor" operates years ago with the death of a cousin. IMO these people are, mostly (not ALL of them), despicable.

Thanks for dropping by.

My organs won't be usable when I'm done with them.

Yup, we had "Requestors" in the hospital I worked' As a charge nurse I had to deal with them, they were never hospital staff, I use to call them used car salesmen. I had great disdain for them. I had a couple of patients on my med/surg unit that had horrific accidents and as my observation noted some forms of conscienceless and response to stimuli yet the attending overruled me and even with heated back room discussions with said attending and an administration weinie were always overruled by them. I noted in the patient's chart my observation and opinion. It didn't matter, the parents/wife/family saw extensive medical bills and time away from their lives taken care of what would be a severely disabled family member as described by said requestor and made the decision to harvest organs. I won't be used, I rescinded my organ donation status and changed my will to reflect that. I console people today about donating and that it is an industry or a profit point center for the medico/pharma industry.

Cederq , With your experience and knowledge, I was hoping you'd weigh in on this topic and comment. I'm very glad you did. Thank you.

Cederq, Question for you; is it accurate that hearing is the last sensory to "go" and if so, why? I've searched on this, but curious what your take on it is. Thanks.

Hearing is one of the first senses we develop and one of the first in evolution to form, even before eyes. Yes, patients under deep sedation and anesthesia have had the capacity to hear the surroundings and when awakened have reported to having heard conversations and to repeat them. You have to be careful in surgery, the patient maybe listening to you. I know of studies and have observed this phenomenon with close to death patients when talking with them while preforming procedures and care while unconscious, unresponsive and on heart and pulmonary monitors having their blood pressure and pulse rise and some eye flutter under their eye lids. I personally have had those patients when my hand is close having them grasp or move their fingers across your hand while non-responsive to other stimuli or gross motor reflex inducing techniques. Your hearing is the most direct and closet sensory input to your brain, the most hardwired.

Cederq , Thank you for that. Makes sense.

I just copy/pasted it at Phil's to our reply exchanges, you can delete my reply if you like.
Thanks again.
