Without protection dolphins, a large truck could have caused the same disaster. While the bridge looked substantial, if built to 1/100 scale, it would seem to be a spindly, delicate toy.

I know there are all types of theories, but the accident could have happened thirty years ago if the conditions were right. The shop lost power and lost control. We had the same thing happen a few years ago in the local ship channel. In a few seconds, a well controlled large ship slammed into another one that was docked after it lost power. That, and right down the same channel, one large bridge has many skid marks along the dolphins where ships have scraped against them. Those weren't caused by power failures, they were caused by a multiple reasons, including somebody not paying attention.

Jess , I can't figure out why the ship wasn't more centered between the support columns.

Re: the SOTN video and link, I like providing readers with alternative views, maybe leaning towards conspiracy theories , which odds may be low, but never zero. I've looked at their video a few times and find the questions raised are worth asking and getting an honest answer. Then, I thought we'd get that after 9/11, OK City, Waco, Ruby Ridge etc. Am I too cynical? ;)

Ships "telegraph" commands to the rudder, and without power, the rudder doesn't respond, the wind and current take over, and the change in direction is beyond the control of the bridge. Even under power, a strong wind can veer the course of a ship by a substantial amount.

If I had to guess, the correct response, when the ship lost power, was to drop the anchors immediately. From what I read, that didn't happen until it was too late to stop the forward motion of the ship. Otherwise, somebody in authority failed with their responsibility. Many large ships have a "black box" recorder of the controls and conversations on the bridge.

Jess Thanks for that.
